Can I Install Speakers in My Bathroom?

If you have stayed in a hotel recently, you may have noticed the proliferation of built-in sound systems which have appeared in rooms over the past few years - speakers are neatly hidden in the ceiling or walls of every room, including the bathroom. You may ask is it safe to have speakers in an area which often gets full of steam, and is there anything special about the speakers they use in hotels? The answer is that is is safe when the correct speakers are used, the speakers used are specially waterproofed so that they can stand the constant exposure to water and steam.

Waterproof speakers are generally easy to install, though some are easier than others. Most in-ceiling speakers are designed to attach to plasterboard. Before buying speakers, it is a good idea to ensure that you will have enough space to install them. Make sure to check the depth of the space behind the plasterboard as well as the width between the beams, otherwise you may find that you have cut a hole in your ceiling or wall, but the speakers don't fit in. Make sure that you can install the cable to the speakers neatly, ideally, you can run it through the ceiling cavity, though this can sometimes be difficult if there ere obstructions. An ideal time to run the cable is whilst renovations are taking place, whilst you can access the cavity easily. Don't forget, you can use the speaker holes to aid with cable routing if they are positioned strategically.

For the best sound quality, and easiest installation, I would recommend using the AQ Aqcent 6 if it will fit. They have a set of plastic clamps which grip the back of the plasterboard, so you do not see any fixings from the front, and there is also no need to worry about fixing screws into plasterboard, a notably awkward task, which is best avoided wherever possible. When installing your speakers also bear in mind that whilst the speaker itself is waterproof, the other things in the ceiling or wall cavity probably aren't, so putting some sealant round the edge, once you have connected them up to check that they are working well, is a good idea.
